So many things that we are so certain that we understand, but what do we really know? In all of science, when can we be absolutely certain that we know something?
I know, I haven't written an article in a while and I am well overdue. I have been keeping busy, but largely have been researching or wasting time. My time wasting has mainly been catching up on my video games that I had sitting around collecting dust. I am not going to write all about the games that I have been playing in this post however. Hopefully I will get to that soon.
Lately I have been watching a lot of science shows and documentaries, mainly those focused around space and physics. I have also been reading a lot of internet articles and books (or parts of books) on the subjects. It amuses me and yet frustrates me to read the attitudes that people have towards science. In comments on the internet I see that almost everyone believes that what we think we know is actually fact and nothing else. The scientists often seem to feel this way, and the people reading and generally misunderstanding the findings tend to feel this way as well. People tend to get awfully upset when I say things like this, but since I am writing in my own blog at the moment, I can say what I like.
What we know, is actually what we think we know.
People like to tell me that this theory or that theory is true because it is based on a proven fact. What is a proven fact? A fact is proven by basing it upon other things that we know. The problem here is that everything that we know is based upon things that we know, and we could be wrong about any one of those things. If we are wrong about any one of those things, we could in turn be wrong about thousands of other things. If you look back on our known history, you will see that what we "know" changes constantly. We find out that we were wrong and we change our thinking. Why then, are so many of you so certain that we are right about everything?
Consider the following. Light is a constant. It is said to always move at the same speed. I personally take this information (I realize I am not going into specifics or the math of the subject) and apply the creative side of my brain. I consider that since light is always the same speed, maybe it is not moving at all. Everything else is. You might say that things emit light. Objects can create light. But can they? How do I know for sure? Maybe objects can only make light affect us. It is possible in my mind that light is a surface. Not a surface like a piece of paper that is flat and has 4 edges, but more as a highway that is not flat and has no direction (or maybe it does). Perhaps the key to travelling the speed of light is actually to stop moving.
I am not presenting this idea as fact. I realize it is very likely not anywhere close to the truth. My point here is that the more our science advances, the more we seem to feel that we are correct. We seem to be losing much of our creativity as technology catches up to what we perceive to be our needs. The absolute worst mistake that we can make as a species is to believe that we are correct. Question everything, and accept "facts" with a grain of salt.
To be clear, I am not bashing science. It obviously is important and I tend to enjoy many aspects of it. In no way am I trying to say that scientists are idiots or that all theories are incorrect.
